Andre Braugher, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ star, dies at 61

Andre Braugher, an actor famous for playing lawmen, died Monday. He was 61.

Mr. Braugher’s talent agency, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, confirmed the death. His publicist Jennifer Allen said in a news release that the actor had “a brief illness,” though she did not give specifics.

The Chicago native starred as Capt. Raymond Holt in the comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which ran for eight seasons on Fox and NBC between 2013 and 2021. Another major turn as a police man was as detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.” That show ran for seven seasons in the 1990s.

Mr. Braugher won the first of his two Emmy awards as 1998’s “Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series” for his role as the hard-nosed Frank Pembleton on “Homicide.” His second Emmy was for “Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie” in 2006 for his portrayal of Nick Atwater in the FX series “Thief.”

He was nominated 11 times, according to the Emmy website.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree in fine arts from Juilliard, according to the Emmy website. Braugher got his start as Telly Savalas’ sidekick in television movies based on the original “Kojak” series.

According to Allen, the publicist, Mr. Braugher is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson; sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley; brother Charles Jennings and his mother, Sally Braugher.
